The Appliance based firewall is a cost effective solution for small and medium sized businesses requiring secure high speed access to the Internet. It provides a secure connection to the internet, but is not as efficient establishing secure connections from the internet to the LAN. These devices implement NAT (Network Address Translation) to provide security for the LAN.
NAT shields your LAN from the internet by implementing private IP addresses that are not visible from the internet and routes traffic between the internet and these addresses using an industry standard set of rules. These rules decide what traffic can flow from the internet to your LAN, filtering out potentially dangerous traffic. Normally appliance based firewalls are best suited to environments that require only internet and email access. Many manufacturers such as Cisco, 3Com, LinkSys and others combine a Router, NAT Firewall and 100TX Ethernet Switch into one economical device.
